Ukraine: European Council Adopts Schengen Visa Waiver for Ukrainian Nationals

Latest On European Council Adopting Schengen Visa Waiver For Ukrainian Nationals

On 11 May 2017, the European council adopted a proposal on visa liberalization for Ukraine nationals, which allows Ukrainian to travel to Schengen Area without visas.

With this exemption, Ukrainian who holds a biometric passport will have the right to enter the EU visa-free for 90 days in any 180 day period only for business, tourist and family purpose. The exemption is not valid for work or study.

The visa free regime will be enforced 20 days after publication in the Official Journal, once the Council and the European parliament signs the adopted regulation.

The Schengen Area includes 22 European Union Member States and 4 non- members Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. Although Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Romania are not part of the Schengen Area, they have a visa policy based on the Schengen Area.

The visa exemption does not apply to United Kingdom and Ireland which are not part of the Schengen area.
