UK: Skills Charge for Tier 2 Sponsors

Latest news on The Home Office’s announcement on UK charge for Tier 2 Sponsors

On 10 February 2017, UK The Home Office announced that subject to parliamentary approval, Tier 2 sponsors may be required to pay an Immigration Skills Charge when sponsoring a migrant worker from outside the European Economic Area (EEA). This is expected to come into force on 6 April 2017.
The skills charge will be £1000 per year for most sponsors. It will be payable upfront for the total period of time covered by the Certificate of Sponsorship, and will be paid for at the same time the sponsor pays to assign a Certificate of Sponsorship.

The skills charge will apply to sponsors of Tier 2 workers who will be applying from:

  • outside the UK for a visa
  • inside the UK to switch to this visa from another
  • inside the UK to extend their existing visa

The skills charge will not apply to the following:

  • Migrants sponsored in Tier 2 before 6 April 2017 and applying to extend their stay inside the UK with the same or different sponsor
  • Tier 2 (Intra-company Transfer) Graduate Trainees
  • Migrants sponsored to do specified PhD level occupation
  • Tier 4 students in the UK switching to Tier 2 (General) visas

The skills charge will not be applicable to any dependants.
