The Ministry of Manpower has imposed tougher regulations on the hiring of Omani citizens
In the effort to strengthen local employment, the Omani Ministry of Manpower has imposed tougher regulations on hiring Omani citizens. Businesses who do not meet the hiring quotas could face the following action:
- If local hiring percentages are not met employers will be fined 250 to 500 Omani Rials (approximately US$650-$1300) for each local worker that is required to be hired. Fines are doubled if the company does not improve their hiring ratio within six months
- In extreme cases the revocation of their sponsorship of work permits (for foreign national employees)
All employers should be wary that labour authorities are conducting inspections and enforcing the new rules.
