China: Update regarding Residence Permit Cards

The Chinese government abolished the work permit requirement for residence of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. From 1st September 2018 residents of the three aforementioned counties can apply for a Chinese residence card directly so long as they adhere to one of the below criteria:

  • Be under legal employment
  • Have legal and stable residence
  • Be undertaking continuous study

The residence card application must be made to the local Public Security Bureau. Residence cards will be valid for up to five years and issued within 20 working days.
