On November 1 2016, Canada’s government revealed its Global Skills Strategy as part of the 2016 Fall Economic Statement.
The Global Skills Strategy identifies the need for Canadian businesses to leverage global talent in a more effective, timely manner. To accomplish this, the strategy will enable faster processing for certain types of skilled temporary foreign workers and will introduce a new class of business visitor who will not require a work permit if the project in Canada is short term.
Currently, it takes several months for work permit applications to be completed which can often cause resourcing issues for Canadian employers. By introducing faster processing times and a new class of business visitor, businesses can bring in employees with specialized skills that cannot be found locally much faster.
