Belgium: Single permit system to be introduced

From 1st January 2019 a new type of work and residence system will be introduced in all three regions of Belgium. The system will meet the EU single permit regulation that unites work and residence procedures for non EU/EEA workers across the EU.

Once the single permit system is introduced those foreign nationals holding work permits under the current regulations will have a one year transition period which will end on 1st January 2020. Under this new process, employers will be required to submit a completed application with all documentation to their regional authorities who will issue the work authorisation. The application will be given to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and then the appropriate Belgian Consulate to issue the work visa. The single permit will be valid for three years.
