United States: Potential implications following U.S Presidential election

Potential implications following U.S Presidential election

Work Permits for Certain Spouses of H-1B and L-1 Workers

Currently spouses of certain H-1B and L-1 workers are allowed to apply for and obtain work permits while they await permanent residence. This rule is popular among employers as it is viewed as an effort to provide relief to an obscure and pro-longed permanent residence process. With immigration at the forefront of President Trump’s campaign, it is uncertain as to whether the Trump administration will implement a rule change to eliminate this benefit.

Nonimmigrant and Immigrant Visa Numbers

It is uncertain whether the Trump administration will introduce legislation to change H-1B non-immigrant visas or immigrant visas. With businesses struggling to find qualified workers, the majority desire for increased numbers. Unemployment rates are low therefore the Trump administration may believe that an increase in the number of highly skilled workers supports economic recovery.
