United Arab Emirates: Employment Entry Permits (EEPs) for Indian nationals seeking employment

Employment Entry Permits (EEPs) for Indian nationals seeking employment

The UAE consular posts in Delhi and Kerala have now introduced a process of issuing Employment Entry Permits (EEPs) for Indian nationals seeking employment in the UAE. This is currently only available for specific blue-collar professions and for domestic help but the facility may be extended to a wider audience in the near future.

The initial application for an EPP will still need to be filed in the UAE; however, with the new process, a reference number will be shared with the employer and subsequently the applicant. The applicant would then need to visit the relevant UAE consular post with the reference number provided and additional supporting documents in order to be issued with the EEP. Reports suggest that neighboring UAE consular posts (including Mumbai) may follow a similar process.

This new process provides more flexibility to both employers and employees by introducing a consular component to work authorization applications. The change also aims to improve security since the applicant is required to be physically present in his/her country of legal residence in order to obtain entry privileges. While this facility only applies to limited professions, it is likely to be extended to all job titles in the future.
