New Zealand: Proposed change to temporary work visa systems

The Minister of Immigration Iain Lees-Galloway has proposed changes to the temporary work visa system. He has opened a public consultation which includes employees, employers or parties with vested interest to communicate their thoughts and ideas.

The likely impact of the changes to the temporary work visa will:

  • Be longer processing times
  • New accreditation and labour market testing rules for hiring employers

As yet, there is no implementation date for this as the salient points surrounding the changes have not been agreed. It is, however, thought that if the proposal is held seriously with the public and is approved by the New Zealand Cabinet the estimated implementation date will be sometime in 2019.
