Canada: Foreign Workers and Short Term Business Visitors

Latest updates on Foreign Workers and Short Term Business Visitors in Canada

Effective on the 21st September 2017 there has been a provisional agreement between Canada and the European Union which will allow entry of temporary foreign workers and short term business visitors.

This agreement is called the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

While this is only a provisional agreement, it may take some years to become a permanent fixture in immigration as all of the EU states must sign the deal.

The proposed benefits of the CETA agreement will allow and exempt from labour market testing for intra-company transferees, contractual service providers, independent professionals and investors. Each of the aforementioned professional types will require different qualifying criteria:

Intra Company Transfers: must have been employed by the sending entity for at least 12 months. This type of visa will allow an initial 3 year assignment followed by an 18 months extension. Graduates who wish to become trainees with a company will be allowed work permits for up to 12 months dependent on their university degree.

Service providers and independent professionals: must be contracted for up to 12 months and hold professional and educational qualifications

Investors: can work for up to 12 months with possible extensions.
The CETA agreement aims to also generate a mutual guideline for the recognition of qualifications earned in Canada and the EU.
