Belgium: New immigration salary thresholds from January 2017

New immigration salary thresholds from January 2017

Belgium authorities have released new immigration salary thresholds for 2017 and these have slightly increased from 2016. See salary thresholds listed below:

  • Work permit “B” for highly qualified employees = 39,824 EUR to 40,123 EUR.
  • Work permit “B” for managerial employees = 66,442 EUR to 66,941 EUR.
  • Blue card = 51, 494 EUR to 51,881 EUR.

The salary reference for local vs seconded employees differs from those above and depends on the employment status. If you are to send an employee to Belgium on a local contract, work permit authorities will consider the base salary subject to Belgian social security. For those on secondment, authorities will consider the taxable salary (after the deduction of any allowable social security).

It is important that the salary and other details such as benefits and contributions are clearly stated in the employment contract or secondment letter. These should be linked to the employment activities carried out in Belgium and need to be detailed upfront. Non-EU/EEA employees planning to enter Belgium from 1 January 2017 will need to ensure that they meet the new salary thresholds for the appropriate work permit category.
