Australia: Skilling Australians Fund

“Skilling Australians Fund” bill to commence in March 18 replacing the previous Training Benchmarks scheme

The current initiative called “Training Benchmarks” is due to be replaced in March 2018 by the “Skilling Australians Fund”.

The Training Benchmarks was applicable to employers who sponsor work permits (457 visas) or permanent visas, to demonstrate they have spent 1% of their payroll on training their local Australian workforce over the last three years. The new bill will highlight the criteria that Australian businesses must fill to demonstrate they are training their local workforce:

For businesses that have an annual turnover than less than $10 million

  1. If a business nominates a four year 457 visa, they must pay a fee of $1200 per year (totalling $4800)
  2. If a business with a less than $10 million annual turnover wishes to have a permanent visa holder employed, they must pay a flat $3000

For businesses that have an annual turnover of more than $10 million

  1. If the business planned to nominate a single person for a 2 year visa, they would need to pay a fee of $1800 per year
  2. If a business with a more than $10 million annual turnover wishes to have a permanent visa holder employed, they must pay a flat $5000
